January

The Riley Blake 2026 Quilt Block Challenge

Join us for the Riley Blake 2026 Quilt Block Challenge —a fun, skill-building quilt-along perfect for quilters of all experience levels! Each week, beginning January 6th, Riley Blake releases a free new block pattern, and together we’ll work through the full sampler quilt, one step at a time.

Our shop has kits for the Confetti Cotton Solids version of the quilt available to order here, which includes all the fabric needed for the quilt top and binding. Backing fabric is available separately, so you can choose your favorite finish!

To make the experience even more enjoyable, we’re hosting Saturday Morning Block Sessions right here in the shop. Bring your fabrics, settle in, and sew alongside fellow quilters as we work through that week’s block together. Sessions are $5 each (pay as you go), and you’re welcome to attend any session you like—come to one, a few, or all!  

It’s the perfect blend of creativity, community, and steady progress toward a gorgeous finished quilt. Youth Sewing: Winter Session

Dates:  Mondays,  January 12 - April 20, 2026.  No class on January 19th, February 16th, or March 30th.  Time:  5:00-6:30 pm.  Location:  Alyssum Patch Quilt Shop.  213 E. Grand River Ave.  Howell, Mi. 48843.

During this twelve-session winter program, students will work at their own pace to create fun, kid-friendly projects while building confidence and learning new skills.

Designed for ages 10 and up, this class welcomes all experience levels—from brand-new beginners to seasoned young sewists. Students will gain hands-on practice with sewing machine operation, project planning, pattern reading, safe and accurate cutting, and a variety of sewing and quilting techniques. Along the way, they’ll complete engaging projects they’ll be proud to bring home.

The registration fee includes all project materials, as well as use of a sewing machine during class.

Ages:  Youth 10+.  Skill Level:  All skill levels welcome.   Seats available:  6.  Cost:  $240

Drop Spindle Basics/Fiber Arts Workshop

Date:  Saturday, January 24, 2026.  Time:  11:00 am-1:00 pm.  Location:  Alyssum Patch Quilt Shop.  213 E. Grand River Ave.  Howell, Mi.  48843

This class will teach the basics of turning wool into yarn using a drop spindle.  Students will create several yards of plied yarn, and will leave with their own wooden spindle to keep.  Brand new beginners and those with some experience are all welcome.  Already have a spindle?  Feel free to bring your own. 

Ages:  Adult 16+.  Skill Level:  All skill levels welcome.   Seats available:  6.  Cost:  $45 includes spindle to keep.  $33 if bringing your own spindle.  Instructor:  Krista Smith

Cross Stitch Basics/Youth Needlework Workshop

Date:  Wednesday, January 28th.  Time:  4:00-6:00 pm.  Location:  Alyssum Patch Quilt Shop.  213. E. Grand River Ave.  Howell, Mi.  48843.

Students will learn the basics of cross stitching on a small hoop, including how to read a pattern.

Quilt Block Sweatshirt Workshop - CLASS FULL

Date:  Saturday, January 31st.  Time:  9:30-11:30 am.   Location:  Alyssum Patch Quilt Shop.  213 E. Grand River Ave.  Howell, MI. 48843.

Get cozy and creative in this fun, hands-on workshop! Students will piece a quilt block and learn how to attach it to a sweatshirt to create a one-of-a-kind, wearable piece of art.

During class, we’ll cover quilt block construction, proper placement and attachment techniques, and simple finishing methods. Students will also be introduced to basic hand quilting to add charming decorative stitches and texture to their finished sweatshirt.

This workshop is perfect for confident beginners and up—no prior garment sewing experience needed. Bring your creativity, and leave with a warm, stylish, handmade sweatshirt you’ll be proud to wear!

Trip Around the World Quilt Workshop

Dates:  Tuesdays, February 3rd, 10th & 17th.  Time:  6:00-7:30 pm.   Location:  Alyssum Patch Contemporary Quilt Shop.  213 E. Grand River Ave.  Howell, MI. 48843.

Make a stunning Trip Around the World quilt top — a classic design that looks complex but comes together easily using a simple, time-saving technique. Basic sewing experience is recommended, and no prior quilting experience is required. Join us for this beginner-friendly workshop and leave with a beautiful quilt top, feeling confident and inspired.  

Participate in the way that suits you best:   In-person sessions at the shop, or sew at your own pace from home with weekly emailed instructions.  Quilt top finishes at 55” x 55”.

Hand Stitched Felt Hearts/Needlework Workshop

Dates:  Wednesday, February 4th.  Time:  5:00-7:00 pm.   Location:  Alyssum Patch Quilt Shop.  213 E. Grand River Ave.  Howell, MI. 48843

Students will create hand stitched hearts with felt and embroidery thread. They may choose to string them together as a garland or keep them separate for decoration or small gifts.

This hands-on class introduces you to the basics of operating a sewing machine — from threading and bobbins to needles, presser feet, and safe operation. You’ll practice sewing straight seams and gain the confidence to move on to beginner project classes.

Weaving Fun & Storytime/Parent & Child Fiber Arts Workshop

Children will learn the basics of weaving with their adult, and everyone will hear a weaving related story read aloud!

Design a Canvas Wall Hanging/Youth Arts & Craft Workshop

Students will use a variety of supplies, including paint pens, fabric, colorful thread, etc. to create a canvas banner with a design of their choosing.

Weaving Workshop/Fiber Arts Workshop

Learn the basics of tapestry weaving in this beginner level class! Each student will create their own unique work of art using the supplies provided by the instructor.
